Who are the “Friends of Dorothy” anyway? And why does this mysterious lady seem to be popular enough to have friends in Santa Fe? Actually it is a special interest group that host informal gatherings for gay and lesbians to meet and mingle and enjoy the gay life in Santa Fe. The term Friends of Dorothy, often abbreviated as FOD, became popular in the 50’s as the LGBT community felt a special connection to Judy Garland. And thus became a secret code word that gays used in discreetly identifying other gays to socialize with.
Fast forward to the present. We are here! And we are queer! No longer feeling the need for secrecy, Friends of Dorothy gatherings have become a huge social network across the globe and its presence in Santa Fe is no different. The group meets once a month on Friday’s at 6pm onwards and is attended by 200 – 250 members of Santa Fe’s gay community.
It is hosted by a different venue each month including such places as Ecantado Resort, Las Posada, Inn and Spa at Loretto, Santa Fe Capital Grill, Bishops Lodge Resort & Spa just to name a few. The hosting company generously supplies the group with an array of appetizers.
In the winter months we enjoy the warmth of the roaring fires inside while watching the snow gently fall on Santa Fe. During the summer months we gather outside sipping cocktails while watching the gorgeous Santa Fe sunsets magically appear before setting behind the mountains. Finally the clear night overhead gives way to millions of stars which is not to be missed.

Friday Night w/Dorothy (FNWD) a.k.a Friends of Dorothy was started by Ian Johnson and has morphed into an extremely popular social event in Santa Fe. Anyone can attend and it is a great way to see & catch up with friends as well as meet new people and network! Also, due to the success of FNWD…Ian is now able to pick and choose exactly where he wants to hold each event as well as leverage what he wants in return from the business. Sometimes it is free valet parking for guests, reduced drink prices for the event on up to special room rates for attendees. The point? Gay people and our supporters have money, connections & power in Santa Fe and FNWD is a great way to show the community we are here & who we are!
